Causes of fuel injector malfunction

Causes of fuel injector malfunction

The fuel injector is part of the fuel-to-engine delivery system. The petrol pump delivers gasoline to the injector to spray it at a certain angle and flow into the manifold, which mixes the gasoline and air in preparation for it to reach the combustion chamber to start the engine.

The failure of the sprayer causes problems in the operation of the engine, and in this article we will discuss the reasons for the failure of the fuel sprayer, the signs of problems in it, and tips to maintain it.

6 Reasons for a Fuel Injector Malfunction

Fuel injector malfunctions are caused by one of the following:

  1. The low quality of car gasoline and its high percentage of impurities, which causes the fuel injector to become clogged and its inability to spray gasoline effectively due to the accumulation of dirt and particles in it.
  2. Alkynes waxes harden around the fuel injector nozzle due to the high heat after the car has been idle or driven for a short time.
  3. A malfunction or an electrical short in the electrical coils on the sprayer, which is responsible for creating a magnetic field that attracts the sprayer's vertical axis, so its failure causes a problem in the sprayer's work.
  4. The inability of the crankcase forced ventilation (PVC) system to pick up oils and excess fuel during the compression process from the piston and crankshaft in its air filters, which leads to these oils reaching the atomizer and clogging it.
  5. The presence of a crack or a fracture in the fuel injector that causes gasoline to leak from it, which affects the operation of the engine in general.
  6. A malfunction in the control unit responsible for the combustion system (ECU) in the engine, it will not be able to direct the sprayer to pump the right amount of gasoline into the combustion chambers.

Signs of a problem with the petrol injector

The following things indicate a malfunction in the fuel injector and the need to inspect and repair it, and the following are mentioned:

Signs of a problem with the petrol injector
Signs of a problem with the petrol injector

1. The vehicle vibrates excessively during pause

The failure of the petrol sprayer and its inability to deliver the right amount of gasoline to the engine causes the car to vibrate uncomfortably and violently during a pause, and may also result in the car being unable to move after its pause and the need to restart it.

2. Motor vibration

The inability of the injector to pump gasoline causes the engine cylinder to be unable to start the combustion process, causing the engine to vibrate significantly.

3. Engine ignition malfunction

Failure to get enough fuel into the engine due to a blockage in the fuel injector leads to its inability to ignite, and its inability to respond to increased speed when the gasoline is pressed immediately, and may also lead to the engine overheating or the air and gasoline not mixing properly, which are both They will affect the operation of the engine greatly.

4. Illuminated the check engine indicator on the dashboard

This indicator alerts you to the need to inspect the engine and the presence of a problem in one of its parts, which may be the gasoline injector.

5. Fuel Leak

Wearing the fuel injector and its stopper leads to the leakage of gasoline on its surface or on the pipes adjacent to it.

6. The smell of fuel

The fuel smell occurs when gasoline is leaking from the injector, or when it is left open without using it, and the smell may indicate that there is a leak in other parts of the car.

7. Engine idling (motor rev)

Pumping injector gas into the cylinders slows the car improperly.

8. Frequent refilling of gasoline

Injector failures cause the engine to need more fuel in a shorter time.

9. More gas emissions

Gasoline leakage from the fuel injector causes the fuel to not burn completely, which leads to more toxic gases being emitted from the car, heaviness in the air-fuel mixture and failure of the catalytic converter, which reduces the harm of these emissions by working harder.

Means to maintain the fuel injector

It is recommended to follow the following things that will protect the fuel injector from malfunctions and problems:

  1. Periodically check the sprayer whenever the car travels between 25,000-40,000 km, to make sure it is clean and not clogged with grease and dirt, and it is recommended to check it during shorter periods if the car is not walking long distances; Because the material will be deposited more on it in this case.
  2. Adding special materials to the sprayer in the fuel tank, which works to clean it and dissolve sedimentary materials, to facilitate its cleaning and maintenance.
  3. Change engine oil, fuel filters, and engine; To make sure the gasoline flows smoothly without putting pressure on the fuel injector, and to avoid the injector working too hard if it is clogged or there are impurities in the oil.
  4. Waiting for the engine to cool down before turning it off completely, to avoid the presence of heat that will cause solidification of materials on the fuel injector.
